So… online dating

26 Sep

I’m online dating. Yes, I know it’s only been two weeks since I broke up with Jealous Boy, but that relationship had been on its last legs for a while. I’ve enjoyed several bouts of singledom throughout my twenties, relishing the fact that I never had to accommodate my social diary around anyone else’s, apologise for working late or feel guilty for the times when all I wanted to do was slob out on the sofa in my dressing gown with unwashed hair, pedicuring my feet and watching re-runs of Friends. But as I creep towards 30, with my friends mostly coupled up around me and wintery nights calling for another body to warm the bed, I’ve come to realise (shock, horror) that I do actually prefer being one half of a pair.

This is not the first time I’ve ventured into the world of online dating. There was the Pablo fiasco a few years ago and a guy I dated for a while a couple of Christmases ago, both of whom I met on Guardian Soulmates. This time I went for Match, partly because a few friends had recommended it and partly because I found GSM a little too London-centric.
I like online dating for three reasons:

  1. It’s an easy way to meet men who are a) definitely single, and b) looking for a relationship. Plus you can check out their taste in music and weed out anyone who’s a fan of Hard House.
  2. You can go ‘man shopping’ even when you’re slobbed out on the sofa in your dressing gown with unwashed hair, pedicuring your feet and watching re-runs of Friends.
  3. It’s how my mum met my step-dad and they’ve been happily married for five years.

So, I’ve added a few photos and written a few paragraphs about myself without giving too much away (after all, you don’t want them to know everything about you before you even get to the first date). And given my bad track record with younger men I’ve specified that I’m only looking for men aged between 29 and 40.

Now all I have to do is sit back and watch the responses roll in…
